When we talk about Hvar island we can say that it is one of the most beautiful pearls of the Adriatic coast. Hvar is often compared to Portuguese Madeira. The island of Hvar was already inhabited in the Stone Age, the evidence is the presence of weapons which were found in the caves throughout the island. Significant towns on the island are Hvar, Jelsa, Stari Grad and Sucuraj. The town of Hvar has about 4000 inhabitants and is the main tourist center of the island. It features a large public square - Stephens square called "Pjaca". It is the largest square in Dalmatia, spanning an area of 4500 m. There you can also see the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Stjepan standing on the eastern side of the town square. On the south side of the square you can find the historic Theater of Hvar - the oldest public/communal theater in Europe. It was founded in 1612. The theater was erected above the Arsenal, a building that was used to repair galleys and as a warehouse for nautical accessories. The Theater was rebuilt in 1953 and 1988 when parlor chairs were set, a gift from the Dubrovnik theater "Marin Drzic". Today, the Croatian National Theater is open for visitors.
The island of Hvar is known for its lavender fields. Lavender oil from Hvar is considered to be the highest quality oil in the world! Lavender flower blooms in the summer, the beauty of the purple flower fields, surrounded by green Mediterranean vegetation and the blue sea is truly a wonderful scene.
